Finkenberg in Zillertal
Finkenberg in the Tyrolean Zillertal is located ca. three km southwest of Mayrhofen, at the entrance to the Tuxertal, between the foothills of the Penken and the Grünberg. After Mayrhofen it is the second largest municipality of Zillertal in terms of area. The municipal area includes the Zemmtal west of the Zemmbach, a part of the Zemmgrund, the Zamsergrund, the Schlegeisgrund with the Schlegeis reservoir, the border to south Tyrol with the Schwarzenstein (3368 m), Grosser Möseler (3480 m), the Hochfeiler (3509 m), the Hohe Wand (3289 m) and at the municipal border to Schmirn, the Olperer (3476 m). Within the borough are several glaciers.
The borough consists of hamlets and farm villages, Altenstall, Astegg, Au, Bösdornau, Brunnhaus, Dornau, Enntal, Freithof, Grent, Gschößwand, Gstan, Innerberg, Kohlstatt, Lindtal, Mooslau, Persal, Stein, Tal, Tiefental, Tuxegg, and Zellberger.
Ginzling has a statute rather unique for Tyrol: the district of Dornauberg left of the Zemmbach belongs to Finkenberg while Ginzling right of the Zemmbach belongs to Mayrhofen. Ginzling has its own administrator. The Zemmbach also forms the border between the Innsbruck diocese to the west and the Salzburg archdiocese to the east.
